Commissions

I take commissions on a first-come-first-serve basis. As much as I would love to make it so, art is my love- but not lucrative enough to be my day job. I currently work full time as an administrator in the public sector (busy but fun!), so my ability to take on commissions will be limited, and timeframes may vary when my professional priorities take precedent.

Reference Photos

All of my artwork is created with the use of reference photographs. Whether you are commissioning a single subject portrait or hoping to capture multiple pets in a single portrait, it is absolutely essential for me to have clear and sharp images of each pet, in order to produce the quality of art that you deserve.

When taking reference photographs, it is crucial to remember that the portrait will typically be displayed at eye level on your wall. I have found that the best photographs are taken at your pet's eye level. You can achieve this by either crouching down with the camera or placing your pet on a higher surface.

In cases where you cannot take new photographs and must select from older albums (such as for memorial portraits), please choose the photo that best matches the criteria and quality you would aim for if you were taking the picture yourself today.

Take as many photographs as possible. This increases your chances of having 2-3 suitable images. Stand approximately 3-6 feet away from your subject, and zoom in to ensure that the subject fills the frame.

Make sure to capture the desired stance. Are the ears forward, the mouth closed, and the head slightly tilted? Close-up shots of the nose and eyes are also important, as these details significantly impact the final portrait.

Lighting plays a vital role. Ideally, take photographs outdoors on a bright day, but if that’s not feasible, position your pet near a window or door where ample natural light is available. When photographing indoors, it’s best to keep the flash off, as it can cause overexposure of the fur and red-eye effects. Remember, every painting evolves from the eyes, making this a crucial point to consider.

I understand that in certain situations, providing high resolution images of your animals may be difficult or even impossible. As such I will make every attempt to work with what you have, and find a solution. However, In the event that adequate photos cannot be provided, I reserve the right to refuse a commission in such cases where I feel I cannot provide a quality piece of art. Your pets, your time, and your money are held in my highest respect.
